About Apehangers Grill

My photo
Go BIG or go HOME,has been Randy’s motto for as long as he can remember. He was probably born with a grillin’ fork in his hand. After years of everyone ohhhhing and ahhhhhhing over his BBQ at social events he decided to go a little bigger with his passion and open a grill. First stop… TEXAS to get a “Randy” sized smoker/grill, then on to their first mobile unit and street fairs. The praise continues and the passion is reignited every time he sees a customer bite into his BBQ and make “the face”. Oh you know it… the “foodgasm” face. Usually followed by an “oh my God that is soooo good”!

Bike Build Update

I guess you can say we are one step closer to getting that bike in here and the build started.

The grill seats have been rearranged to make room for it and we have several parties who are donating frames, motors, etc.  I am getting really excited but I know it won't be here until after the first of the year.  Why can't everyone work on my schedule?

New stuff is going on the wall though now.  I think I was in a funk after having the Restaurant Impossible show cancelled.  There were so many things they were doing and I had scratched them off MY list.  Now that they are back on MY list, I am a little overwhelmed with all there is still to do.  After all, I keep walking past the men's bathroom door and thinking "dang I need to paint that".  I am truly sorry y'all, it isn'ts that I don't love and care about you or your experience, I am truly just running out of minutes in the day.  Know where I can buy more?

I am loving the beers we have on tap.  At first I thought it was just the major players, but not that we are dealing with some cool little breweries I am not just loving the beer but loving the people I am meeting who makes the beer and who are a part of this cool craft brew craze.

What else is new?????  Well our web site crashed but our webmaster Eric is putting in long hours to make it happen again and it will be bigger and better than ever.  Also our new calendars are FINALLY done and so excited for them to be on sale.  Lastly, new menus going out this week with new items and of course loving the additional to all the new drinks (Bloody Marys, Margaritas, Mimosas', etc.)

What more could I ask for?  Owning a restaurant in Southern California just blocks from the beach with my husband and having the best customers EVER!

THE LONG AND WINDY ROAD

Oh Lord, I can finally see the end!  The floors are going in starting tomorrow and last round of inspections start on Monday.  Everyone I have asked who has opened a restaurant all says the same thing and that is that it took them twice as long as they expected and three times more money.  Opening a restaurant is definately not for the faint of heart!

I have made a checklist on the white board for each day and that is making feel now like this is really going to happen.  Lots of other things going on super great things but I have been told I can't talk about it.  Now if you know me, you know that this is next to impossible.  I have to buy Christmas gifts the day before so I don't give them to the person.  LORD... HELP ME!!!

I promise the details and news is so super cool and amazing you won't believe it! Ok, I have to stop or I will tell you!

Friday this place will not even look the same and I CAN'T WAIT!!!  Thanks to all of you who have kept me sane through this whole thing!  I do love you!!!  -Charli

Are we there yet? SOOOOOONNNNN

I have to say this has truly been one of the biggest challenges of my life.  Each week brings a new hurdle but we find the skill and strength to get over it.  Our chef Joel had me watch a short video on the web called The Butterfly Circus.  It was a short film that I finally watched and so glad I did.  The message was that those with the greatest struggles have the advantage because theirs is the greatest reward.  Much like the caterpillar working its way out of a cocoon.  You have to watch it, it really isn’t about butterflies.  When it is all said and done, we will be stronger and wiser for sure.
We have the computer system (POS) being installed Friday, floors installed on Saturday and then we just wait for final inspections so we can open the doors.  I have truly found that opening a restaurant is a very unpredictable venture.  This is not an easy task for someone like me who likes things black and white.  I want to know when and where and it just doesn’t work that way when dealing with so many different government agencies.  I am reminded of the fish Darla in Finding Nemo “just keep swimming, just keep swimming”.
Thanks to our employees for your patience during this process and for our friends and family who love and support us even on the days we are not so worthy of it.
Are we there yet?   SOOOONNNN.

New Hire Orientation!

Friday night was our 2nd orientation for new employees, but this time we held it in our restaurant!  We had seven new employees on this night, plus another eight, we are becoming huge!

Randy, our Pitmaster was teaching us all about bbq, well, not all, the Pitmaster does have to retain some secrets or else someone would run out and open up a tent and cook it up at the Street Markets.  ;)

In a few months you'll have the opportunity to enjoy a BBQ class with Randy at our restaurant and also by Christmas we are hoping to have out our Pitmaster DVD series!

ApeHangers Grill at the Yelp BBQ in Coronado Event.

Jeff L. from Yelp had set up a BBQ event at the Tidelands Park in Coronado today.

It was a fun day for all the local BBQ enthusiasts to get together, talk sauce, rubs, smokers & sides.  A bunch of people showed up from the San Diego area, the farthest about 1 1/2 hours away!

Jeff showed up in the morning early to pick out a prime spot by the beach and got the meat on the smokers.  He had about 6 racks of ribs on and later did up some chicken which came out perfectly.

ApeHangers Grill provided the BBQ sauce for the get together which went over great!  Everybody loved it!

Thanks again Jeff and everyone for coming out for the love of bbq!

Are you open yet?

That is the question we've been hearing the most lately.  Are you open yet?  No, but we can set up a catering event for you!

It's been a busy few months as we secured a location for our restaurant and started the renovation progress.  We are starting the final touches at the restaurant and have hired our staff.  We are waiting on the inspection progress and then we can open and start serving up our awesome BBQ to everyone again!
